China’s government has sharply criticized new US restrictions on Chinese companies’ access to American technology as “economic harassment”. The US is “abusing export controls” to crack down on Chinese firms and institutions, a spokesman for the Department of Commerce in Beijing said on Friday after three dozen Chinese companies were placed on a US blacklist. The US government issued the new sanctions the day before – about two months after restricting the supply of state-of-the-art semiconductors and equipment for manufacturing such chips to China.
