World trade – cabinet paves the way for Ceta – economy

The federal government is paving the way for the ratification of the controversial free trade agreement with Canada, Ceta. The cabinet approved a corresponding ratification law on Friday, which must now be discussed by the Bundestag. The agreement was signed more than five years ago, but will only apply temporarily until all EU countries have ratified it. At the same time, the cabinet passed a new trade policy agenda: According to this, the federal government wants to work in future to ensure that trade agreements also help to enforce international agreements on climate protection, biodiversity and labor standards. Trade sanctions should be imposed for violations.
