World tour with Otto: 26 years, one journey, one car – a Mercedes G

Almost everyone dreams of a trip around the world. A round-the-world ticket is quickly bought and flown off. But what Gunther Holtorf has achieved is unique: in 26 years he has traveled 215 countries, territories and areas in his powder-blue vehicle.

When he arrived in Berlin in October 2014 after his last stage in front of the Brandenburg Gate, not only did an extraordinary adventure come to an end, but his trip around the world was also ripe for an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

He set out with his wife Christine in 1989. They were on the road together for 22 years before she died of cancer. After that, he continued the journey in her favor. One archived website tells her story of freedom, adventure and happiness on every continent. He also died at the beginning of October.

“During our tour I often climbed onto the roof to be able to take better photos. For us as a souvenir,” says Gunther Holtorf. “When we set off out of pure wanderlust, we would never have dreamed that these pictures would one day become a book. On the contrary: We planned to discover Africa and then later drive through South America. The whole world? Thought of that we don’t at first. “

On the following pages of the photo series we show the most beautiful pictures from Otto’s journey through Asia, those in the illustrated book with the title “Otto – 899,592 km – 26 years – One journey – One car” in the Riva Publishing House have appeared.
