The five permanent members of the UN Security Council agreed on a common line towards the radical Islamist Taliban on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. After taking power in Afghanistan, the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia and China called on the Taliban to form a government that “represents all segments of the population,” as UN Secretary General António Guterres said.
Accordingly, all five world powers wanted “a peaceful and stable Afghanistan in which humanitarian aid can be distributed without problems and without discrimination”. Important agreement between the five world powers
A US official described the meeting called by British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss as “constructive” and with “many agreements”. The official said, “I don’t think anyone is happy with the composition of this interim government, including the Chinese.”
The unification of the five world powers is significant, as Moscow and Beijing abstained at the end of August when the Security Council passed a resolution on the expectations of the international community for the new regime in Kabul.
Rejection of the Taliban interim government
After taking power in Afghanistan in mid-August, the Taliban named the members of their internationally unrecognized transitional government. However, there was neither a woman nor a member of the government responsible for women’s rights. The radical Islamists also failed to comply with the demands of other states to involve other population groups in government.
Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) criticized this again on Wednesday: “The announcement of a non-inclusive government was a tactical mistake by the Taliban,” he said in a speech to the foreign ministers of the G20 states in New York. “This decision will make it more difficult for us to maintain contact with them,” he said. “It is important that you hear this message from all of us.”
Maas described Afghanistan as the “greatest challenge” facing the international community. “As the G20, however, we should not only use our economic strength, but also our political weight to influence the decisions of the new rulers in Afghanistan,” he demanded.
