World economy ‘in better shape’ than expected, says Janet Yellen

The global economy is “in better shape” than predicted a few months ago, amid the economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Thursday.

“The global economy is in a better position than many predicted a few months ago,” Janet Yellen told reporters on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Bangalore, India. “The challenges we face are real and the future is still uncertain, but the outlook has improved.” The International Monetary Fund (IMF), which last month revised upwards its forecast for global growth for 2023, now expects 2.9% this year, against 2.7% initially.
