Former national coach Joachim Löw was surprised by Mario Götze’s move to Germany, but sees advantages for the 30-year-old in a possible return to the national team.

“He will play in the Champions League again, is the focus here in the Bundesliga and wants to recommend himself for the World Cup. He has all the qualities for it,” Löw told Sky about Götze, whose move to Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt was announced on June 21.

“Of course I didn’t expect Mario to return to Germany, not at this point in time,” said Löw. “But I’m very happy for Mario and Eintracht. Mario is an exceptional player, very professional, and with his great game intelligence he fits in very well with Eintracht.”

Götze is moving to Frankfurt from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. The winner of the 2014 World Cup final played his last international match in November 2017 under Löw.
