The start of the World Cup for Alpine ski racers in Sölden was canceled due to strong winds. Even before the first round of the men’s giant slalom, there were strong gusts in the upper section of the route.

The World Cup opener for alpine ski racers in Sölden was canceled due to strong winds. Even before the first round of the men’s giant slalom, there were strong gusts in the upper section of the route.

The drivers then went onto the slopes from the reserve start. During the first run the wind increased again and after 47 of 73 starters the race was stopped.

The Austrian Marco Schwarz was in the lead at this point, Fabian Gratz was in 22nd place. The cancellation was “extremely bitter,” said Gratz. “But fairness and safety are paramount, so I can understand it.” The decision was “definitely” the right one, said the Alpine director of the German Ski Association (DSV), Wolfgang Maier.

The other German starters, Anton Grammel and Jonas Stockinger, had not yet taken to the track. The Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami won the women’s giant slalom on Saturday.
