The plans will be approved at the FIFA Congress in 2024. There is no doubt about that. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the World Cup, they wanted to “invite the whole world to take part in the celebration of the beautiful game (…) and the FIFA World Cup itself,” said the FIFA statement.
Spain, Portugal and Morocco will automatically qualify for the tournament. The opening game will take place at the Estadio Centenario in Uruguay’s capital Montevideo.
“In a divided world, FIFA and football unite,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “The FIFA Council, which represents the entire world of football, has unanimously decided to celebrate in the most appropriate way the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup, the first edition of which was held in Uruguay in 1930. As a result, celebrations will be held in South America and three South American countries – Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay – will each host one game (…).”
