World Climate Conference: Drought Republic of Germany – why every drop of rain counts

In Dubai, scientists, politicians and representatives of NGOs are fighting for better protection against droughts, heat waves and rising temperatures. Rainy Germany, of all places, is one of the regions with the highest water loss in the world. What you can do about it.

Water shortages – that wasn’t an issue in Germany for a long time. But with the long-lasting drought in 2018 and the two years that followed, that suddenly changed: fields withered, forests burned, shipping on the Rhine had to be stopped due to extremely low water levels, the chemical company BASF reduced production, and power plants reduced electricity production due to a lack of cooling water. The damage to farmers, energy producers and companies ran into billions.

The water levels of the Rhine are dropping so much more and more often that ships can only sail with reduced freight
