Sam Parsons falls in his World Cup heat and is heartbroken. He doesn’t know how to proceed. Previously it had caught some gold candidates in Budapest.
The fall bad luck at the World Championships in Athletics also hit a German runner painfully in the heats over 5000 meters.
For Sam Parsons from SCC Berlin, the title fights in Budapest ended abruptly. “I have no idea why that happened. It’s the first time it’s happened on the track in my life,” said the 29-year-old, visibly upset.
He doesn’t know how things will continue for him, said the German record holder for the 5,000 meters indoors. “I’m so upset now. I gave so much to be here. It was one of the best moments of my whole career.” Until the fall came.
“Felt Good”
Parsons, in a good position, caught Nicholas Kipkorir in front of him on the foot with two laps to go and fell. The Australian Stewart McSweyn fell over him. “Things like that happen,” McSweyn said afterwards. At first Parsons still had the impression that he had been caught from behind. But the slow motion on TV showed something different. Parsons was heartbroken. “The legs were there, it was so slow, I had a good feeling.”
Right at the start, two Dutch women were caught falling. Femke Bol on his way to gold in the 400m mixed relay and Sifan Hassan in the 10,000m sprint for the title fell just before the finish line. Jamaica’s Rasheed Broadbell, who came to Budapest as the best of the year, lost all his chances in the 110 meter hurdles after a fall in the prelims.
