Olaf Scholz praises the law on the immigration of skilled workers during a factory visit in Thuringia. The shortage is a problem “that I prefer to others” – and considers the recruitment of skilled workers to be solvable.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) sees securing the need for skilled workers as one of the greatest challenges that Germany will have to face in the coming decades.

In the next 10, 20, maybe even 30 years, one of the main tasks will be to use every opportunity so that every young person receives good vocational training, said Scholz during a company visit in Waltershausen, Thuringia. It is also about training people who are in the workforce and attracting skilled workers from abroad.

One step on this path is the Skilled Labor Immigration Act, which could come into force shortly. A lack of skilled workers also played a major role when he visited Sealable Solutions GmbH. “Of course, the topic affects everyone,” said the Chancellor after talks with employees of the company. It is a problem “that I prefer to others,” said Scholz, referring to times of high unemployment, especially in East Germany. He considers the recruitment of skilled workers to be solvable.

Employer President Rainer Dulger had called on politicians and authorities this week to make more efforts to attract foreign skilled workers to Germany. “The Skilled Immigration Act is a step in the right direction. But much more needs to be done.”

Friendly reception for Chancellor Scholz

The Federal Chancellor was warmly received by the company’s staff in Waltershausen. The chancellor was applauded before a meeting with employees. Scholz acknowledged the courage of the two managing directors and employees in separating the company from a group division in 2020 and putting it on its own two feet. “It’s impressive to see how people work here.”

According to the company, Sealable Solutions GmbH employs around 170 people and sells its products in more than 50 countries. Profiles are made from synthetic and natural rubber, which are primarily used as seals in tunnel and track construction, as well as in industry. Waltershausen is a location with more than 100 years of tradition in the rubber industry.
