Women’s shelter in Ebersberg: Hurry! – Ebersberg

It is clear that projects because of Corona have to remain in the Ebersberg district office. But when it comes to the planned women’s shelter, the question arises: Are the right priorities being set?

It’s great news: A possible location for an Ebersberg women’s shelter has been found, and financing is currently being worked out. Nevertheless, an opening date is still in the distant future: the financing must be secured, then the approval of the members of the district committees is still pending, as is the call for tenders and selection of the sponsorship, recruitment, a possible conversion or renovation and suitable furnishing of the house and , and, and – and that’s exactly the problem: It’s already taking far too long, the decision was finally made two years ago!

This is not a blanket criticism of those responsible in the district office. Because the employees there have been doing an incredible extra package of work since Corona. For this, every single one deserves a big thank you and recognition. It is clear that this extra work means that other projects have to be left behind. Nevertheless, in the case of the women’s shelter, the question must be allowed as to whether the priorities of the many projects were set correctly and why no voice from the district parliamentary groups has vehemently emphasized the absolute urgency of this project in the past two years.

Because it is absolutely urgent: In 2020, 139 women in Germany were killed by their partner or ex-partner, according to a report by the Federal Criminal Police Office. There are also numerous other types of crime, the list is long. And anyone who speaks to the team at the Ebersberg women’s emergency hotline knows that, with the support of the association, eight women have been able to move away from their violent partner into their own apartment in the past two years. The pandemic makes the great work of the women’s emergency hotline with women affected by violence extremely difficult – it would be so much easier if there was a women’s shelter in the district. Because it is important to many women that such a place is close to where they live, i.e. where the social environment is, the workplace, the children’s school.

All of this means that so many more women could be helped if they could get out of their violent surroundings at home more quickly – and that would be possible with a place in a women’s shelter in Ebersberg. Hopefully it won’t be long before that happens.
