UEFA Head of Department Nadine Kessler has expressed enthusiasm about ticket sales ahead of the start of the European Women’s Football Championship in England.

“I’m following this closely because it feels like I’m clicking into the ticket system every five minutes,” said the former German international and world footballer from VfL Wolfsburg in an interview with the “Frankfurter Rundschau”.

“We’re already at 500,000 tickets sold, which is huge, with a fifth of ticket sales coming from outside of England,” Kessler said. The previous record for a European Championship is a total of 240,000 spectators from 2017 in the Netherlands. The opening game between England and Austria on Wednesday (9:00 p.m. CEST/ARD) at Manchester’s Old Trafford has long been sold out.

«The historic place should show where the journey is going. It’s already crazy how great the interest has become,” said 34-year-old Kessler, who used to play for Turbine Potsdam. “It’s the biggest stage we’ve ever had in a tournament like this.”
