Wolfsburg against Paris, Sparta Prague against Frankfurt in the live ticker

Wolfsburg is in mourning: For the first time since 2012, the VfL footballers missed the group stage of the Champions League. Last year’s finalists lost the second leg of the last qualifying round against Paris FC on Wednesday evening 0-2 (0-1), after the first leg had ended 3-3 the previous week.

In a first half that was disappointing from Wolfsburg’s perspective, Julie Dufour (38th) gave the visitors the deserved lead. The German cup winner remained unlucky in front of 3,747 spectators – including interim national coach Horst Hrubesch – Dominique Janssen (61st) missed a penalty kick. In the 90th minute, Louise Fleury made the decision.

VfL coach Tommy Stroot had expected a “hot dance”, but his team started with shaking knees. It was only thanks to goalkeeper Lisa Schmitz, who again replaced the ailing regular goalkeeper Merle Frohms, that the hosts did not fall behind earlier.

First, the 31-year-old parried against Mathilde Bordieau (6th), then she defused a hand penalty from Gaetane Thiney (12th). Previously, VfL captain Alexandra Popp had the ball hit her left arm during a tackle.

The She-Wolves, who acted unusually erratic as in the first leg, rarely provided relief until the break. Nevertheless, Ewa Pajor (22nd) almost turned the game on its head, her header hit the post. After the break, VfL took control of the action – in vain.
