Wolf-Dieter Poschmann is dead. The longtime director and later chief reporter of the ZDF main editorial office Sport died last Friday at the age of 70 in Mainz after a short, serious illness. The ZDF announced on Monday. “Wolf-Dieter Poschmann conveyed many great sporting moments to ZDF viewers clearly, competently and with a lot of passion for the performance of the athletes. For over 30 years he was one of the defining faces and one of the memorable voices of many sports programs in the Second”, said ZDF- Editor-in-chief Peter Frey.
The sports journalist and specialist reporter in athletics started working for ZDF in 1986, initially as an intern, then as a freelancer in the main sports department. In 1993 he became a permanent editor in the main sports department, and two years later he was promoted to head of the department. After ten years as head of sports, in 2005 he moved to the position of chief reporter in the main sports department.
After the 2016 Summer Olympics, the former middle-distance runner, who was born in Cologne on May 22, 1951, retired. From 1994 to 2011 Wolf-Dieter Poschmann moderated the “current sport studio” on ZDF. As a moderator and commentator, he was also regularly used at major sporting events: at the Olympic Games, soccer world and European championships, as well as world and European athletics championships.
