Without barriers to the shore of the Glonner Kastensee – Ebersberg

The waves were high, back in 2014, and the topic even caused a stir in the district election campaign: What’s next for the Kastensee – and will there be public access? That was a question that moved many. The reason for this was the fact that the district wanted to sell land to the operator of the popular lido and there was concern that there would never be public access to the lake in bad weather and in the winter months.

In the meantime, the issue has been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved. Since the end of 2021 there has been provisional access to the Kastensee, which makes it possible to walk along the lake shore even on cloudy days. This was preceded by a deal: the district and the pool operator swapped plots of land so that the public bank is now finally accessible from the outside. In addition, agreements on use were made and certified by a notarial deed.

However, the provisional access, which was only approved until the end of April, is now to give way to a permanent variant. The Glonner municipal council, which is responsible for the Kastensee, already approved the Ebersberg district’s plans for the lake in its meeting at the end of January without dissenting votes. In the future, access will even be barrier-free: a paved path with a gradient of less than six percent will be built from the public footpath to the lake.

In summer, the Kastensee is a wonderful place to relax, spacious sunbathing lawns and the moor-like lake water are tempting.

In the summer, the entire area should be able to be used as before. Access is via the entrance area at the café. In bad weather and from October 1st to April 30th, anyone who wants to can still go to the water – but only via the areas purchased by the district. The adjacent privately owned areas are secured against unauthorized entry by a fence system.

Only hedgehogs do not have to go through the gate

A fence of quite considerable dimensions is planned: it should be 1.80 meters high and not tempt people to climb to reach the other side. In addition, some of the gates will protrude slightly into the lake so that it is not so easy to get past them from the side. Only the very little ones don’t have to worry about the fence: there is a 15 centimeter gap to the ground for hedgehogs and other small animals.

An access option from the sidewalk is to be created on the road to ensure access in winter and bad weather. An opening has already been created in the existing fence. This access is divided into two parts. The regular sliding door with a width of 1.50 meters is to be controlled electronically by the pool operator and can also be opened and closed from a smartphone using an app. According to current planning, a door that can be opened manually and is one meter wide will be installed next to the electric sliding gate, which can be opened with a key if necessary.
