With OLED and M3: New iPad Pros should strengthen Apple’s tablet business

Apple is to equip its tablet series with clearly visible improvements in the coming year. Like Bloomberg’s usually well-informed Mark Gurman reportedApple is said to be equipping its upcoming iPad Pro models with a new M3 chip, among other things.

In addition, the tablets should appear with OLED displays. A new Magic Keyboard should also have a larger trackpad and make the tablets look even more like a notebook. The new iPad Pros should be available in 11 and 13 inch sizes, i.e. the same sizes as before.

According to Gurman, Apple’s new iPad Pro models are intended to try and reverse falling tablet sales. The tablet market has been weak for years, interrupted by a small interim high during the corona pandemic.

Tablet market shows declining sales figures

This trend does not go past Apple either – the Sales figures in the second quarter 2023 were 16.8 percent lower than in the same period of the previous year. Sales at Samsung, Lenovo and Xiaomi fell even more, while Lenovo was able to record an increase.

Gurman accuses Apple of having done more model maintenance in recent years than to ensure innovations in its tablets. The last generations of the iPad Airs and iPad Pros were actually quite similar to their predecessors, with the exception of small technical improvements.

Gurman also finds Apple’s tablet lineup confusing. In his opinion, the technical differences between the Air and Pro models are not enough to convince customers of the more expensive iPad Pro.
