Laura Nolte wins world title in monobob – Lisa Buckwitz third
Crazy monobob race. Even Lisa Buckwitz’s track record in the first run is not enough to win despite being in the lead at half time. Laura Nolte coming from fourth place surprised everyone.
Nolte raced from fourth place to first in the third run with the best time, although her start was only decided minutes before after the warm-up. On Saturday at halftime of the World Cup she complained about problems with her adductors. Last year she won in St. Moritz and was crowned the first German monobob world champion. “The physios did their best. It held up,” cheered Nolte. “Everything had to be right from the start in the last run. A lot was possible and a lot turned out,” said Nolte on ARD.
Buckwitz, who arrived as the favorite, didn’t know whether she should be happy or sad. “The track conditions in the third run weren’t the best for me as starting number one. I certainly lost gold, but I won bronze,” said Buckwitz.
Kim Kalicki from Wiesbaden ended up in twelfth place after she had “a bit of bad luck with start number 26 of 26” at the start. Overall, it was a crazy World Championship race because the weather in the Hochsauerland presented itself in all variations, which didn’t make the choice of runners any easier.
