Wine language for beginners: the 12 most important words explained

As the saying goes: “With wine the tongue goes on stilts”? What is meant by this is, of course, that a good wine can put the taste buds in ecstasy, lift them into special heights of pleasure. But it is also true that talking shop about wine can sound stilted to non-connoisseurs. As a layman, you will stumble across terms like barrique and cuvée. And the request to decant quickly sounds disrespectful.

There is a lot to consider if you want to have a say in the illustrious circle of wine connoisseurs. Not only color, country of origin, age, grape variety and storage play a role, but also the right temperature and the appropriate glass. Numerous terms provide information about certain aromas of the grape varieties, right up to taste details such as dry or semi-dry.

Restaurant and hotel owner Ulla Voepel explains the twelve most important terms in the world of wine and what they mean in the photo gallery that you can click through (above). As an assistant wine sommelier, she has once again received an award at the German Wine Award 2021.
