Wimbledon – The day of the French: Halys overthrows Paire (4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4) in the 1st round

Halys returns to Grand Slam six years later

This is the story of two trajectories that intersect. While Benoît Paire has not been able to do it for many weeks, Quentin Halys is on the rise (recent entry into the Top 100) and showed it on Monday on court number 9 at Wimbledon in this 100% tricolor duel. Despite the loss of the first set, the native of Bondy won in four sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4) and 1h54 of play against the Avignonnais in the 1st round. It is only the third time in his career that Halys has qualified for a second Grand Slam round, the first for six years and the 2016 edition of Roland-Garros.

To ensure his success, Halys was able to count on the effectiveness of his first ball: 76% success and 11 aces. For his part, Benoît Paire committed far too many unforced errors (62 including 13 double faults!) to hope for better. For a place in the 3rd round, Halys will challenge Nikoloz Basilashvili or Lukas Rosol.

It goes for Humbert

How complicated it was for Ugo Humbert (N.112)! After a first set won without much problem, the Frenchman was manhandled by the Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (N. 77) for two sets. He finally won in five sets (6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and qualified for the second round of a Major for the first time since the Open. Australia 2021 where he will be opposed to the 3 seed, Casper Ruud, who dominated Albert Ramos Vinolas (7-6, 7-6, 6-2).

Mannarino got hot

For Adrian Mannarino, this Monday was not a cakewalk either. Everything had however started ideally since the tricolor left-hander had won the first two sets against the Australian qualifier Max Purcell, before the latter, 209th at ATP, did not rebel. Result, the French found himself embarked on a 5th act of all dangers but knew how to tighten the game to win with the score of 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 4-6, 6-4 after almost four hours of combat (3h53 precisely). He finds the American Tommy Paul, seeded 30, for a place in the 3rd round.
