Why the protests in small towns are so important – Opinion

The new dimension of protests against right-wing extremism is not evident in the big cities, but in the countryside. Anyone who shows their face there is risking something.

It was so warm recently at the first major demonstration in Hamburg, despite the “creeping, wet frost” that Bishop Kirsten Fehrs warned about from the stage – a metaphor for the latest right-wing extremist expulsion fantasies. It was warm because of the many bodies meeting in too little space. But also because of the pleasant certainty that the pictures of this afternoon would make it into the news, like the other participant records: Hamburg stable, Düsseldorf stable, Berlin stable, Munich stable. That’s nice, that’s important. That is not enough.
