Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni complains that Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz are isolating their country. Politically, this is a typical post-fascist reflex. But the EU must be very careful in its dealings with Italy

Are Berlin and Paris losing Rome? Or is it a lot of drama about nothing? Giorgia Meloni reminds the major partners in the European Union of the fate of the Titanic, yes: the Titanic. If the ship goes down, says Italy’s Prime Minister with her very own urgency, then all the passengers will go down too, no matter what class you’re traveling in. The EU, she adds, does not consist of countries from Serie A and Serie B, as Italy’s first and second football leagues are called. Does she already feel Serie B?
