Food in Germany has never become so expensive in such a short time. Nevertheless, according to official statistics, an average of almost eleven million tons of food end up in the garbage every year. And there are many indications that waste will increase again this year despite inflation. The federal government wants to halve this huge amount by 2030. As? This is what the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is setting out in its “National Strategy for Reducing Food Waste”. Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) wants to present them by the end of the year, possibly in the coming days. From the point of view of the food industry, the draft is already “ready for signature”. He is the result years of negotiations between wholesale and retail and the Ministry. Consumer representatives did not sit directly at the table.
