An unlikely lucky charm. After his incredible jaunt in the Bordeaux tramway on October 31, 2013, Serge the lama had become a real star on social networks. The circus animal, which had been stolen by five young Bordeaux somewhat tipsy, had become very courted that year. Including by the Girondins de Bordeaux club, which had decided to make him its muse, on the occasion of the reception of FC Nantes, during the 2013-2014 Ligue 1 season.
On November 10, 2013, the lama therefore performed a lap of honor at the Chaban-Delmas stadium, alongside his trainer, John Beautour, and the president of the Girondin club, Jean-Louis Triaud. On that day, the people of Nantes did not yet know it, but they will not gain any more in Gironde territory thereafter. “I have fond memories of it,” recalls John Beautour. “It was a great adventure. All this media around the llama, it was incredible! We had no trouble letting it be known that we were coming to a town ”. This passage of the four-legged star had also been widely broadcast by the Girondins de Bordeaux.
If the presence of the lama had amused the supporters before the match, it had not really succeeded for the Bordeaux players, nor for their coach at the time, Francis Gillot: “People get bored so much that they are satisfied with very little. It’s the world that’s like that. We are in the extravagance, in the sensational ”. Because it was the Nantes people who won 3-0, thanks to the achievements of Djilobodji, Djordjevic and Bessat. That season, FC Nantes had started its championship very well and was in 4th place in Ligue 1 before this 13th day of the championship.
No more Nantes victory
Serge the lama had therefore done very well for the Canaries, even if they had finished behind Bordeaux at the end of the season (13th against 7th). Since this large victory in 2013, FC Nantes has never won again in Bordeaux in the league. “I did not know this anecdote”, laughs the boss of the circus.
This Sunday, the Girondins de Bordeaux receive FC Nantes on the occasion of the 10th day of the championship. They are also celebrating 140 years of the club, with festivities on the program. Serge the lama will not be there: “He unfortunately died of old age” during the summer of 2020, indicates his breeder.
