Married and father of one child, Samuel Clot decided to be permanently sterilized, thanks to a vasectomy. This operation, carried out by a doctor, involves blocking the transport of sperm to the ejaculatory canal. Depending on the surgeon’s technique, the vas deferens are cut or blocked in order to prevent the passage of sperm into the seminal fluid. The operation lasts around ten minutes, under anesthesia, and can be carried out without a scalpel. It is irreversible.
No need to be in a relationship or to have had children
Legal in France since 2001, vasectomy concerns men who no longer, or not, have the desire to procreate. To benefit from it, there is no need to be in a relationship or to have had children. This operation remains quite rare in our country, unlike Anglo-Saxon countries or in Quebec (one in three men over 50 years old uses it).
According to Health Insurance figures in 2022, the number of reimbursed vasectomies in France increased from 1,908 in 2010 to 23,306 in 2021, a twelve-fold increase in ten years. At the same time, the number of tubal ligations, which is a definitive contraceptive surgical procedure for females, fell from 31,473 in 2010 to 21,490 in 2021.
