Environmentalists are appalled by the federal government’s decision to allow farmers to cultivate areas originally intended for species protection. For many animals and plants they would have been the last place of refuge.
Norbert Schäffer has an unpleasant déjà vu: Last year, the federal government overturned the regulation according to which farmers should leave four percent of their arable land fallow for reasons of species protection, recalls the chairman of the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation in Bavaria (LBV). . Back then because of the war in Ukraine – grain was supposed to be grown on the land. Now the federal government is suspending the rule again – this time to appease the angry farmers who have been taking to the streets for weeks.
