When the children move out: parents’ frustration and joy – society

When children pack the moving boxes, a phase of life comes to an end. This plunges some parents, especially mothers, into a deep crisis – but some are looking forward to the Empty Nest. Just like our author.

It is 18,150 kilometers to Auckland. You can hardly get much further away from home, viewed from Upper Bavaria. One of my twin daughters has been there for three weeks, and perhaps the greatest imaginable distance is punishment for saying “Phew! Finally!” a little too loudly. and “Woo-hoo!” called when it was clear that both would move out soon after passing their Abitur. At least temporarily. One to New Zealand, the other to Austria.
