Watch the video: When should children be allowed to use a smartphone? I DISCUSSION

Children are online for many hours a day via their smartphones. And because it is impossible for parents and teachers to control the content, their little ones can be exposed to hatred, bullying and violence. We ask: What is the correct way to use smartphones and social media? Is only a ban going to help?

How many of you really know what children and young people are exposed to in WhatsApp groups, TikTok or Snapchat? They see war crimes, animal cruelty and pornography unfiltered. Since it is almost impossible to control social media content, the dangers are constantly increasing.

In the Diskuthek@Körber-Stiftung we debate: What is the correct way to use smartphones and social media? Does consumption have to be regulated by law? And what can parents, educators and politicians do to protect our children?

When should children get a cell phone? These guests discuss:

  • Darleen Besman is a mommy blogger, musician and presenter. As a mother of two children, she recognizes many dangers when it comes to smartphones – including herself. However, she is also of the opinion that it is often viewed far too negatively and downright demonized.
  • Prof. Dr. Christian Monday is professor of molecular psychology at the University of Ulm. In his book “You are ours!” he analyzes the data business model and the psychological strategies of the large Internet companies. He warns that constant digital interruptions prevent children from completing critical life tasks.
