When measuring at home, a different limit applies

Anyone suffering from high blood pressure should check their values regularly – even at home. However, there is one thing you should definitely keep in mind.

In Germany, about every third adult has high blood pressure. Experts speak of high blood pressure from a systolic value of 140 and a diastolic value of 90; short 140/90 mmHg. If the disease remains undetected, it can lead to serious cardiovascular diseases.

Measure blood pressure at home

When measuring blood pressure at home, a lower limit applies than in the doctor’s office. The German Heart Foundation draws attention to this.

Because: At the doctor’s you are usually more tense than at home, which affects your blood pressure. So while the limit in practice is 140/90 mmHg, at home it is 135/85 mmHg. The results of the measurements should always be recorded.

Prevention: Have your blood pressure measured at least once a year

By the way: Just measuring at home is not enough. Even those who feel good as a high blood pressure patient should have their values checked regularly in the doctor’s office – according to heart specialists every six months.

And even people who have not been diagnosed with high blood pressure should have their blood pressure checked regularly. The German Hypertension League recommends that blood pressure should be measured at least once a year from the age of 40 at the latest. From the age of 50, a half-yearly blood pressure measurement is recommended.
