When Internet users laugh at “male gaze” on TikTok

It went viral in just a few days. The hashtag #writtenbyaman (“written by a man”), which blatantly mocks the male gauze and the very unreliable way in which women are often portrayed in works by men, has been re-shared on the TikTok social network in recent days.

Many Internet users have thus parodied through small humorous videos the clichés conveyed by female characters in series and films. The goal? Denounce the hypersexualization of women on the small and big screens.

Over 40 million views on the TikTok platform

The hashtag accumulated this Saturday more than 40 million views on the popular platform for young people. Thousands of Internet users have thus played the game, filming themselves staging themselves like a stereotypical female character, obviously imagined by a man. Most of them adopt an ultra-sexy behavior in any situation: while cleaning, waking up in the morning, reading a book or practicing a sporting activity.

the male gauze, the male gaze, also called “male vision”, is a concept that designates the fact that the dominant visual culture (photography, cinema, advertising, video games, etc.) requires the public to adopt a perspective and a point of view exclusively male.
