What features users can expect in 2024
WhatsApp has some new features in the works, some of which are already in beta. What to expect in 2024.
Colors and design of an app are crucial for its recognition value. Messenger giant WhatsApp has consistently relied on green since its founding 15 years ago and the green speech bubble with a telephone receiver has now become a global icon. But apparently they are ready to meet users’ wishes for individualization. In addition to a redesign in 2024, what could happen to WhatsApp users?
Alleged screenshots of a redesign have been floating around the internet since last summer, showing changed filter options and, in the Android version, a move of the toolbar from the top to the bottom of the screen. The latter is already the case with the iOS version.
However, what has made the biggest waves in recent weeks and months is the option to be able to change the basic colors of the messenger app. The iOS version 24.1.10.70 also offers the colors blue, white, black, pink and purple – instead of the usual green. Many observers expect this function to make it out of the beta phase and into the app in 2024.
Shared music streaming and AI features
The option to integrate music streaming apps into video calls is also currently in beta. It is primarily aimed at friends and families in video calls, but can also be useful in some professional sectors. So if one of the participants in the conversation plays a song or video in another app, the sound can be heard by everyone. This function is also expected in 2024.
Due to the crazy pace of development of artificial intelligence (AI), a language model will probably make it into the messenger app by 2024. The open source language model Llama 2, developed by parent company Meta, will be on board with WhatsApp, even if there doesn’t seem to be any final clarity about how. The logical step would be to have a chatbot integrated into the messenger app that sits between the other contacts like a normal chat.
There is also a lot of speculation online about Llama 2’s other areas of activity within WhatsApp. For example, a tester of the language model demonstrates on the Reddit platformhow he trained it to respond to WhatsApp messages in the tester’s writing and speaking style. But users could also receive an AI update as early as 2024 when it comes to creating their own emojis and stickers.
New Channels features since mid-January
In addition, WhatsApp developers are continuing to work on the functionality of the channels introduced last September. Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg (39) announced further innovations for the feature via his own WhatsApp channel on Wednesday, some of which are still in the beta phase, such as holding surveys. Several people will soon be able to be admins in channels. However, the option to share voice messages within a channel has already been available since Zuckerberg’s announcement.
