Anyone who sends a lot of files via Whatsapp can quickly have a problem with the memory of the cell phone. But there is a feature that can help.

This article first appeared on RTL.de.

Who doesn’t know it: A funny video here, a cute cat photo there and the mobile phone memory is full of files that were sent via Whatsapp – and these are real memory hogs! You can change that with a special feature in the messenger service.

The feature makes managing videos and images sent via Whatsapp really user-friendly. How it works?

This is how you find the tidying function on Whatsapp

  • Via the settings in the app you can access “Manage storage” via the menu item “Storage and data”.
  • Conveniently, Whatsapp has listed the files with thumbnails that use the most storage space here in a clear manner. Sorted under the items “Larger than 5 MB” and “Frequently forwarded” you will find videos & Co. that take up the most of your storage space.
  • With one click on the files you can now easily delete them without having to search through each chat history individually.
  • Not cleaned up enough yet? Below you will find a list of all chats – and how much storage space they use. Here, too, you can simply delete the files sent within the chats – and your smartphone will be tidy again in no time!

Alternatively, you can also use the “self-deleting (previously: expired) messages” function to save storage space in advance. Because this function automatically deletes the large files that you have sent.

The messenger service, which was founded in 2009, completely changed the way we deal with short messages. The news service has long been an integral part of our lives, and the app has more than just a chat function

You can see in the photo gallery: Our society is talking to each other more than ever before – and is opening its mouth less and less. Smartphone apps have revolutionized our communication. Whatsapp in particular is very popular with Germans. But more and more people find Facebook’s Messenger and the group’s thirst for data creepy. In the photo gallery you will find out which five messengers you should look at instead.
