Write, speak – and soon also chat into the camera: The messenger service Whatsapp is apparently planning to introduce video messages.

Exciting news for everyone for whom sending voice messages via smartphone is not enough: In the near future, the instant messenger service Whatsapp plans to introduce a new option for sending messages. In addition to text and voice messages, the offer will then apparently be expanded to include video messages.

Whatsapp, a messaging service that has belonged to the Meta (formerly Facebook) group since 2014, is used by millions of people worldwide. Instead of having to pay for individual SMS, users can send text messages, pictures and videos over the Internet free of charge. It is also possible to send files such as photos or videos with a size of up to two gigabytes.

In addition to text and voice messaging, a third messaging option will soon be available. The developers are currently working on the implementation of video messages, as can be seen from the beta versions for Android and iOS. Users using one of these beta versions can check if they can already try the new feature by tapping on the microphone icon. When the microphone icon is clicked to convert it to a video camera icon, video messages can be sent.

The recipient must also have the same app version to receive the video messages. However, it should be noted that video messages can have a maximum length of 60 seconds, while voice messages allow for much longer recordings. Of course, video messages are also end-to-end encrypted and can be viewed as often as you like. It is not yet known when the new function will be rolled out for all Whatsapp users.
