What Zelensky’s historic speech in Washington means for Europe – Opinion

Without the help of the United States, there would no longer be a free Ukraine, as Volodymyr Zelenskiy now acknowledges. For Germany, this means that if Washington does even more for Kyiv in the future, Berlin will also have an obligation.

In his historic speech to Congress in Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the free world, but not to the free world. Zelensky was not addressing the wider Western community that supports his Russian-invaded country with arms and money. It was a speech aimed entirely at Americans and America. Zelenskiy also spoke of the US allies, but primarily as comrades in the fate whose future well-being will also depend on how resolutely the Americans continue their support for the struggle of the Ukrainians. One or the other, even in Germany, may not feel appreciated enough, but the indisputable manifested itself in Zelensky’s Washington appearance. Without US help, free Ukraine would no longer exist.
