Christmas without celebrations, Christmas markets and church visits – that is already the bitter reality for many Germans in 2021.

In the face of rapidly increasing incidences and filling intensive care units, citizens, retailers and restaurants are asking themselves: what will Christmas be like in 2021 and where will Christmas activities take place? Many people in Germany have already canceled activities during the Christmas season due to Corona, as the Holiday Special of the Statista Global Consumer Survey shows.

Fourth corona wave: What will fail at Christmas 2021

Most important place: the closest family circle

For example, 26 percent of the study participants refrained from going out or traveling at the end of December. A similar number refrain from going to a Christmas market or attending events such as concerts (23 percent each). Christmas shopping in stores is out of the question for 16 percent. In contrast, family visits in general and Christmas parties in close family circles are rarely canceled. Particularly tragic for many respondents; the renouncement of a visit to the parish on Christmas Eve (19 percent).
