In 1979, the Swiss David Bennent played the leading role in Volker Schlöndorff’s film adaptation of Günter Grass’ novel. Bennent, 12 at the time of filming, was born of short stature. So he was an ideal cast for the role of the boy who refuses to grow. The film won, among other things, the Palme d’Or in Cannes, the German Film Prize and the Oscar for best foreign language film.
