HISTORICAL DATA

2018 – Andrea Nahles is elected SPD Chairwoman in Wiesbaden; she is the first woman to head the party. The head of the parliamentary group received only a good 66 percent of the votes at the special party conference. Nahles promises comprehensive renewals.

1993 – The first German-American army corps are put into service in Giebelstadt near Würzburg.

1988 – The first World Cup tournament in chess ends in Brussels with the victory of former world champion Anatoly Karpov from the Soviet Union. The “Chess World Cup” was organized by the Grandmaster Association (GMA), which competed with Fide (Fédération Internationale des Échecs).

1988 – The lightship “Elbe 1” is decommissioned. The floating sea mark, on which a crew of twelve served, will in future be a museum ship in the port of Cuxhaven.

1983 – The magazine “Stern” declares that it has diaries of Adolf Hitler. On April 25, the “Stern” presented the alleged diaries at a press conference. These will be exposed as fakes on May 6th.

1928 – The Greek city of Corinth is almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. More than 10,000 people become homeless. Miraculously, there are few dead.

1418 – The Council of Constance to reform the Church ends. With the election of Pope Martin V in November 1417, the western schism, the schism in the church, came to an end.

1370 – The foundation stone of the Bastille is laid in the French capital of Paris. The eight-tower fortress is part of the city fortifications and becomes a notorious state prison in later centuries.
