Joachim Rukwied has many faces. Last week, at the farmers’ demonstration in Berlin: the farmers’ president stood on the stage at the Brandenburg Gate in a long loden coat, peering darkly out from under a hat. “Too much is too much,” he shouts. A few days later, at the opening of the Green Week in Berlin: Another Rukwied shakes hands, wearing a tie and a discreet suit. People in the country are unsettled, he warns thoughtfully. “We have to look for solutions together.” His dual role has rarely been challenged as much as it is these days. His own people are breathing down his neck.
