The last step in lifting the health restrictions put in place against the coronavirus arrives, this Monday, in England. But the UK’s other nations – Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – have adopted a more cautious schedule.
Here is an overview of what is changing and the measures still in force in the other nations of the United Kingdom, competent in health matters.
England
Despite the opposition of many scientists, most of the last measures still in place have been lifted. He is no longer required by law to wear a mask in transport and public places. The government, which insists on individual responsibility, nevertheless recommends the wearing of a mask. On the other hand, this will be required in public transport in London, decided the Labor mayor of the capital Sadiq Khan. Major supermarket chains are encouraging staff and customers to continue to wear masks.
Nightclubs can reopen and theaters, cinemas and stadiums can again operate at full capacity. In pubs, bar service may resume. The instruction to work from home will be lifted, but many companies are planning a gradual return of their employees. Adults fully vaccinated in the UK and those under 18 from countries classified in orange no longer have to observe quarantine, which can be up to 10 days, with the exception of arrivals from France due to the “persistent presence” of cases of the Beta variant.
Scotland
Scotland removed, also on Monday, most of the restrictions still in place, nevertheless the wearing of a mask remains compulsory in public places and the reduced distance is at one meter but maintained. The rules limiting indoor meetings are lightened, without being completely lifted. Eight people from three different households can see each other in private homes, and ten people from four households in closed public places such as pubs – whose closing time will be changed from 11 p.m. to midnight.
Teleworking will end gradually from August 9 and nightclubs will remain closed. It is from this date that Scotland also plans to lift the last restrictions, but the pro-independence Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has indicated that the wearing of a mask could remain compulsory beyond this date.
Wales
All health restrictions are due to be lifted on August 7, but the government plans to maintain the obligation to wear a mask in public places indoors and on public transport. Currently, six people can meet in private and vacation residences. Indoor events remain limited to 1,000 people seated and up to 200 standing.
North Ireland
The British province must pass a new milestone on July 26 with the end of distancing measures outside and the reduction to one meter indoors. The local assembly is due to vote on July 22 on lifting distancing measures in theaters and museums. The government is due to meet on August 12 to discuss ending the mask requirement on August 16.
