What are the major works carried out at the Château des Ducs?

Bad luck for the many passers-by and tourists who will come to stroll in the courtyard of the castle of the Dukes of Brittany in Nantes in the coming months. Until September, the landscape will be a little marred by imposing scaffolding which already covers part of the facade of the building, classified as a historic monument. The fault with important work, which will however not disturb the visits, specifies the town hall of Nantes. Objective: the restoration of the golden crown tower and the west facades.

“The golden crown tower, made up of loggias and skylights, is adorned with sculptures and decorations dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, commissioned by Anne de Bretagne, which have great historical value and make it one of the jewels of Nantes’ heritage, inform the city. These sculptures are in an alarming state and were subject to safeguard measures in 2020. The delicate work to be carried out will lead to the replacement of the most damaged sculptures. »

As for the facades of the Grand Logis and the Grand Gouvernement, “in tufa stone with a granite base”, it will be more of a major cleaning, with a new general whitewash made from lime. The total operating cost is estimated at 930,000 euros.
