Welcome to the amusement park of horrors

” Welcome ! »What a welcome, thank you, your” Resident Evil “holiday village looks super nice – Capcom

  • resident Evil is a cult horror license of the video game, it had made a return to the sources – and to the chills – with its seventh episode in 2017.
  • Resident Evil 8: Village is the direct sequel, and follows the hero Ethan Winters in a snowy and abandoned village in Europe, in Transylvania
  • Like an amusement park, the game celebrates the figures of the fantastic imagination, from the Grand-Guignol to the Hammer through … resident Evil ? You will understand.

After turning away from horror for more action, the franchise resident Evil had taken the time to reflect and reinvent before Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a return to basics and thrills. New hero (the anonymous Ethan Winters), new point of view (in first person and in VR) and new mythology (the mutamycete), this game finally had no resident Evil as the title and a nod to the fans at the end. With public and critical success, the publisher and developer Capcom takes the same and starts again for Resident Evil: Village, less VR but with an all-out horrific culture, from Grand-Guignol to… resident Evil ?

A fantastic and gothic imagination

Three years after escaping Eveline and the Baker family in Louisiana, Ethan, his wife Mia and their newborn baby Rose now live in Europe, until one night when Chris Redfield, the show’s iconic character, arrives with his soldiers for kidnap Rose. When he regains consciousness, Ethan is near a snowy and abandoned village in Transylvania. This location is no accident.

The game will indeed have fun invoking the essential figures of the fantastic and Gothic imagination. As you can imagine, the village is inhabited by different monsters and mutants, it is even controlled by Mother Miranda and her Lords: the vampire Lady Dimitrescu, the werewolf Karl Heisenberg, the mermaid man Salvatore Moreau and the puppeteer Donna Beneviento. Sounds like a Hammer alumni reunion.

An impressive and immersive achievement

Castle, factory, reservoir… Each villain also has his own playground, the opportunity for players to test different gameplays and to offer nightmarish visions, baroque, sometimes ridiculous, also unexpected. It goes all over the place, but the developers assume, and this Town soon looks like an amusement and horror park, with a little showy mechanics but with an original cast and far from the all-comer zombie. Not to mention an impressive and immersive achievement.

The best of “Resident Evil”?

Resident Evil 8 revisits its classics of horror, but also of video games. If Ethan’s first steps in the village are part of those of the previous game, they also evoke those of Harry Mason in Silent Hill, but also, and above all, those of Leon in Resident Evil 4, its rural village in Spain, its inventory system and its penchant for weapons. Considered a masterpiece and a revolution in survival horror, the title GameCube marked the change in orientation and focus action of the license. Capcom assumes there too, and tries to bring together the best of all worlds, the best of resident Evil. And have the best resident Evil ?
