Weinzierl: 1. FC Nürnberg “has potential that I want to tease out”

New coach introduced

Nuremberg’s new coach Markus Weinzierl wants to demand “even more discipline and intensity” from the players of the traditional club that has crashed. “I can make tough decisions, too,” said the 47-year-old football coach at his presentation on Tuesday. In general, however, his credo is: “Be tough, but also have the connection to the players.”

The Lower Bavarian takes over 1. FC Nuremberg in a sporting crisis. After a blatant drop in performance, the Franconians are in 14th place in the 2nd Bundesliga after ten match days, which is why the separation from the previous head coach Robert Klauß took place after around two and a half years. The season goal of first to sixth place given by the FCN management seems hardly to be reached. In the squad value table, the “club” occupies 7th place – if you compare squad value and current place in the table, there is only a larger discrepancy with the relegated from Bielefeld and Fürth.

“The goal is to get in line first. We have to accept the situation as it is. Until the winter break, I wish that we score consistently,” said sporting director Dieter Hecking on Tuesday.

Weinzierl sees good opportunities at 1. FC Nürnberg – opening match against Holstein Kiel

Despite the disappointing season so far, Weinzierl knows about the class of his new team. “The club has potential that I want to tease out,” he said. “It is important to give the players a simple and good plan that they implement 100 percent.” The aim is to seize the opportunity that such a change of coach brings with it.

On Sunday, the Bundesliga-experienced coach, who was employed by FC Augsburg until the summer, will make his debut on the Franconian touchline. Then Nuremberg welcomes Holstein Kiel. Until then, Weinzierl’s motto is: “Get impressions and draw the right conclusions.”
