Weiden: Falcon survives a collision with a car – Bavaria

A kestrel survived a collision with a car but was trapped behind the car’s grille before being freed.

A kestrel has survived a collision with a car, but was then trapped behind the car’s grille. The bird sat behind “Swedish curtains” and from there looked at everyone involved in amazement, the police said on Friday. Those involved were several police officers and workshop employees from the police station in Weiden in der Oberpfalz, who had asked the driver for help. The specialist staff dismantled the radiator grille on Thursday and was able to save the young falcon. “The bird appeared to be doing relatively well,” said a police spokesman. Officials brought the animal to a sanctuary in Regenstauf (Regensburg district). When asked on Friday, their leader said that the male kestrel had suffered a shock and concussion. “He’s not there from the head yet because he’s not showing any flight behavior and flapping his wings,” said Ferdinand Baer from the State Association for Bird Protection. But the animal is already eating. It is quite possible that the falcon will be released into the wild in a few days.
