The CSU is going into the 2024 European elections with EPP leader Weber as the top candidate. Weber was unanimously proposed for first place on the European list. He is to be confirmed at the CSU party conference on November 25th.

The CSU wants to score points in next year’s European elections with Manfred Weber as the top candidate. “The only Bavarian who makes a difference in Brussels is Manfred Weber,” said CSU leader Markus Söder about the EPP and parliamentary group leader after a CSU board meeting in Munich. “We’re betting on Manfred Weber.”

He was unanimously recommended by the board for first place on the European list. He is to be confirmed at a CSU party conference on November 25th.

“Bavaria Agenda” and demarcation from the AfD

Weber was the EPP’s top candidate in 2019 and actually wanted to become President of the EU Commission at the time. However, after lengthy disputes over the allocation of the post, this office was given to former Federal Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU), who also comes from Germany.

Söder said that for the CSU the European elections were comparable in importance to a federal election. The CSU will make a joint election program with the CDU, but will also set its own accents with its own separate Bavaria program. A “Bavaria agenda” for Europe and a sharp demarcation course from the AfD are planned.

Behind Weber, Angelika Niebler, Christian Doleschal, Monika Hohlmeier and Markus Ferber should get the most promising places on the CSU list.

Weber: Choice of fate for the continent

Weber said it was important to him to highlight the importance of the European elections in light of the current crises. He described the election as a fateful election for the continent. The question is whether it will be possible to find and secure a working pro-European majority in the future European Parliament. The central question is how prosperity can be secured, said Weber.
