Weather: There will be plenty of snow in the mountains for the start of the winter school holidays

A rainy deterioration is gradually taking place in the skies of France bringing vital snowflakes to the massifs. Here’s what to expect.

After the winter heat of last weekend and the numerous temperature records broken locally, the next weekend will be very different since Météo France announces a rainy deterioration across the whole country in the days to come.

Conditions which, on the reliefs, will partly restore the smiles of mountain professionals as a crucial period begins for winter sports resorts, that of the February school holidays.

It is zone C (academies of Montpellier, Toulouse, Paris, Créteil and Versailles) which kicks off the winter holidays this Saturday morning and lovers of mountain pleasures will be spoiled since snow should fall before the end of the weekend. To varying degrees, all stations will benefit from it.

20 cm in the Alps

Thus, from Friday to Sunday, temperatures will gradually drop, according to Météo France. It is the south-eastern regions which should experience the most “serious watering”, with abundant snowfall in the southern Alps, “of the order of 10 to 15 cm should fall locally from the mid-mountains around 1500 m, up to 20 cm from 2000 m”.

There will also be snow in the Pyrenees but “a priori less than in the southern Alps”, Météo France is already warning. “The lower altitude massifs such as the Jura, the Vosges and the Massif Central, which are glaringly lacking snow, will probably have to wait until Sunday or even Monday to see snow,” the forecasters further assure.

Snowfall which will also benefit the Pyrenees at the start of next week.
