Yellow vigilance update for strong winds Saturday January 15, 2022 at 5:56 p.m.

Winter is not over, contrary to what the temperatures observed for a few weeks in Brittany might suggest. And we should have a good demonstration of its ability to manifest itself again from January 15th.

Tomorrow, Saturday January 14, we will still have spring temperatures, nearly everywhere approaching 14-15°C in the afternoon. But strong wind, around 70-80 km/h, including inland, and the rainwill undoubtedly reduce the feeling of softness.

Gale then sleet

The temperatures will refresh clearly for the evening of Saturday January 14 as well as in the night. From Sunday January 15, lower temperatures for the day is initiated. We will only have 8-9°C in the afternoon, and already hail or sleet showers will be set up on the north of Brittanyaround Lannion, Morlaix and Paimpol a little later in the night.

The wind should blow all day strong enough, around 60 km/h in the morning then it will strengthen in the afternoon, around 80/90 km/h according to Meteo France who placed Brittany on yellow alert in strong winds from 3 a.m.

The gusts should be strongest during the night, especially in the region of Saint-Malo/Avranches which should be the most impacted by these winds which could reach 105 km/h.

Meteo Bretagne forecasters announce a strong gust of wind for the night from Sunday to Monday: “In the evening (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.), gusts reach 100 to 120 km/h on the coast. These strong winds then hit the south Brittany coast (from Cornouaille to Loire-Atlantique). The peak of the strongest winds should be reached between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. and until midnight, ”explains Météo Bretagne. Inland, the wind could blow from 70 to 90 km/h.

Uncertainty on the form of precipitation

Forecasters agree, however, on falling temperatures and precipitation that could take the form more or less solid

“Rain, sleet, snow, sunny spells and strong winds. A real time of winter showers that will have to be watched. Indeed, sleet showers are likely to cause problems on the Breton roads, especially on the north coast, “says Steven Tual from Weather Britain.

According to Meteo Franceon the morning of Monday, January 16, thesleet showers will spread to the north of a Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine)-Plouaret (Côtes-d’Armor) line. Coastal towns like Saint-Malo or Saint-Brieuc will not be spared, just like the pink granite coast. Traffic conditions may be complicated on the affected areas.

Feeling of intense cold on Wednesday

In the afternoon, temperatures are dropping still a notch, around 5-6°C (7°C on the south coast), but the feeling of cold will be much more intense because the wind is going to blow quite hardaround 40/50 km/h and with an orientation North West.

Rare showers are expected throughout the day, but it is still difficult to know in what form they will appear (rain, sleet, snow). Precipitation is expected intensify in the night.

Tuesday 17 January, Météo France is considering snow in central Brittany as well as in the region of ferns. The afternoon should remain rainy and sunny spells will replace the rain with a very cold night.

Wednesday, January 18, the day should be dry with a few snowflakes in central Brittany and very cold minimum temperatures, around 4-5°C, a little more in the South and Finistère. Wednesday January 18 should be the day the coldest of the weeke.
