Weather in Bavaria: Heavy snow leads to accidents and school cancellations – Bavaria

Because of the winter weather, school lessons are canceled in parts of eastern Bavaria this Friday. Are affected according to the Bavarian Ministry of Education the districts of Cham, Freyung-Grafenau, Rottal-Inn, Passau, Regen and Straubing-Bogen. There, the ministry reported a complete failure of classes on Thursday. In the district of Deggendorf, there are no classes in the communities north of the Danube or in Deggendorf itself.

Heavy snowfall on Friday night also led to a large number of accidents in parts of southern and eastern Bavaria and hampered morning commuter traffic. There were a few accidents, especially in eastern Bavaria, but they were largely minor. The police headquarters in Oberpfalz alone reported almost 600 weather-related operations in the morning. There were 109 accidents with property damage. In 14 cases, people were slightly injured. Several roads had to be completely or partially closed, including the federal highway 85 near Auerbach and parts of the B16 between the towns of Hauzendorf and Nittenau. In eastern Bavaria, the railway lines between Lam and Cham and between Cham and Waldmünchen were also closed.

There had already been many problems on the roads on Thursday. According to their own statements, the police in Lower Bavaria had to go on around 200 missions. There, too, most of the accidents only resulted in body damage. A number of people were slightly injured.

The German Weather Service (DWD) predicted “intensive continuous snowfall” in the Alps and in the Bavarian Forest for Friday and the weekend. Up to and including Monday, meteorologists are expecting fresh snow in the Alps of between 60 and 80 centimeters, and even up to one meter in “jammed areas”. In the rest of Bavaria, there should also continue to be a lot of rain and remain windy. Temperatures could rise up to eight degrees a day in the north.
