“Real weather misery” – maps show where it will storm and rain at Christmas

The weather at Christmas will be anything but contemplative.

The look through the window probably confirms all the places in Germany what meteorologists almost humorously refer to as “real weather misery”. Wind, clouds and rain are to be expected, write the experts on the “Wetter.de” portal. There is also sleet in the east and probably 50 centimeters of snow in the Erzgebirge for a short time. In the northeast you can even see a bit of sun. But this comparatively beautiful phase is likely to be short-lived this Christmas weekend.

In the north and northeast of Germany, some calm has now returned after storm “Zoltan”. However, it will be windier further south on Saturday, including in parts North Rhine-WestphaliaHesse and Bavaria, as our interactive weather maps show.

Weather at Christmas will be wet, cold and stormy

Overall, the unstable and sometimes very windy weather will continue over the Christmas weekend, predicts “Wetter.de”. It remains windy, especially in the west and south. The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning of individual severe squalls on Saturday for the foothills of the Alps and in open higher altitudes. A wind field will expand further to the northeast on Sunday night.

At Christmas So it stays mostly windy and wet and cold. You can get an overview with our current and interactive maps

Map I: See live where there is a storm

The interactive map below shows where the strongest gusts are currently occurring. You can also view the forecast for a later date using the timeline at the bottom of the graphic. At the top right, the level shown can also refer to, for example, thunderstorms, Rain or snow. A view with severe weather warnings is also possible. You can move the crop and zoom in or out as you wish.

Map II: Strongest gusts of the day

The map above shows where today the strongest gusts are expected. The view is updated regularly. Clicking on the map leads to the wetter.de portal, which, like stern, belongs to RTL Deutschland.

Card III: Chance of a White Christmas

After the early onset of winter, quite a few people were probably hoping for a white Christmas this year, but these wishes remain largely unfulfilled. Instead, the signs in the days before Christmas initially pointed to a storm. Snow is only likely to occur in the mountains; at lower altitudes the probability of this is extremely low.

The map shows what the current probability of snow is at Christmas. It is also provided by Wetter.de.
