Situation

The 3rd heat wave of summer 2022 reaches its peak in the middle of the week. The heat wave now extends from south-west to north-east via Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The highest temperatures are observed inland, while at the seaside, the breezes and the lifting of the sea wind attenuate the very strong heat.
This Wednesday is therefore the hottest day of the week nationally, but the heat will increase further this Thursday from Alsace to the center-east, which will then be the hottest day in this part of the country. At the same time, gradually cooler air will arrive from the northwest and temperatures will drop a few degrees from the Pays de la Loire and the Rennes basin and from Ile-de-France to Belgium.

This heat wave is linked to the establishment of a new heat dome between the Maghreb and France. The drought continues to worsen with the repetition of these very strong heats and the absence of rain. The risk of fires is high in many regions due to these very hot and dry conditions.

Evolution

Chronology and characteristics of this new heat wave

This dayeudi, the heat wave will continue over the southern and eastern two-thirds of the country with highs between 35 and 40°C from Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes to the eastern regions. To the northwest, to the borders of Ile-de-France and the Loire Valley, the descent of a British disturbance will lower temperatures. This disturbance will be very inactive, bringing a few stormy showers, but, being accompanied by a light northerly wind, it will put an end to the heat peak.

Afterwards, from Friday, the heat wave will end in the northern half, but will persist for a few more days in the south, gradually decreasing in intensity. It is possible that the very high heat will continue in the southeast and in Occitania during the weekend and beyond. The weather will become stormier with heavy heat starting Friday in the south. The storms will then break out on the reliefs and the hinterland, bringing in places a local refreshment and heavy showers, which you will have to be wary of if you are on vacation, camping and hiking in the mountains.

The subsequent evolution indicates a possible 4th heat wave next week on the whole territory, which could last until the weekend of August 15th. This development will be confirmed in our next bulletins.
