Situation

A huge mass of torrid air stagnates above the Mediterranean, causing a heat wave on the countries that surround it. The south-east of France is not spared. The temperatures are close to the heat wave thresholds for the departments on yellow alert for at least three days, at least until Wednesday evening.

The nights promise to be tropical with temperatures close to or above 20°C. The afternoons will see temperatures close to 35°C to 40°C over the Mediterranean hinterland.

Observation

Last night, the minimum temperatures were very high with 24.7°C in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), 22.9°C in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales) and Leucate (Aude), 22.4°C in Toulon (Var), 22.1°C in Nîmes (Gard), 21.2°C in Montélimar (Drôme) and 20.6°C in Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône).

Evolution

After a very mild night from Sunday to Monday with minimums not having fallen below 20 to 24°C in the large agglomerations of the south-east, the heat is accentuated this afternoon with peaks at 38°C between Haute-Provence and the lower valley of the Rhone.

Thereafter, and after a tropical night, the very strong heat will reach all the Mediterranean regions, except Roussillon which will remain a little apart. At night, the temperatures will not drop below 20°C and the maximum will be between 35 and 40°C.

This period of very hot afternoons and tropical nights will continue at least until Wednesday evening. However, it could continue for a few more days, which is why this special release can be extended if necessary.
